Urban Leadership Fellows Program 2015

What's it about?

The Urban Leadership Fellows Program is sponsored by The Municipal Form of New York, Inc., and is managed by Futures and Options. It is a paid, six-week internship that allows New York City high school seniors to "gain valuable hands-on work experience and training in the municipal finance industry."

What's the admission process?

Students interested in a career in law or finance must provide: 

1) A resume

2) A 250-500 word personal essay (Can be an essay you have sent to a college) 

Prospective students must also: 

• Be able to work full-time during the six-week internship program 

• Have at least a 3.0 GPA

• Excellent computer skills

• Have strong verbal and written English skills

Grey Minors Technology Program

ATTENTION

Grey Minors and the Department of Youth and Community Development's Ladders are partnering up to provide an amazing opportunity for a pilot program! 

Grey Minors are looking for exceptional high school students ages 15 to 17 to participate in the technological program. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the 6 to 8 week program that will expose them to the advertising industry and technology's role in it. 

Participants will also work with on a tech center project for a pro-bono client: Madison Square Park Conservancy!

If you believe you have the technological skills and demonstrate aptitude knowledge in technology, please email Sherrie by 4:30 PM! She will send your resume as soon as possible!

Also! Participants must be available for a short interview this Friday, January 30th at the DYCD offices! If you believe this would be an issue, please tell Sherrie!

• A six-week internship for high school students who "express interest in the health field"

• Students intern at "designated [health] sites three days per week for five hours per day"

• Must attend a school in the Bronx or Westchester area.

2) Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program

• High-achieving students are paired up with legal employers during the summer

• Provides students with "additional programming before, during, and after the summer" that will help design and prepare a legal career.

3) Prospect Park Zoo Discovery Guide Program

• APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 1st

• Students "focus on conservation education"

• Students help "educate public visitors at exhibits", interact with children and become involved with Project TRUE (Teen Research Urban Ecology)

4) Teen Explainer Program

• APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 1st

• Students explain the ideas of nature and plant science to children and families at The New York Botanical Garden

• Must love to work outdoors and have an interest in plant science and ecology

5) DOROT Summer Teen Internship Program

• APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 15th

• Students engage with senior citizens with daily routines (grocery runs, play games, deliver meals, etc)

• Students "assist with office work at DOROT"

6) The Metropolitan Museum of Art Summer Internship (PAID)

• APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 1st

• Applications will be available on February 1st

• Have an interest in museum careers and great works of art

• Students receive a payment of $1,200 stipend upon successful completion of program

• An "eight-week paid internship at a local organization" where students learn "first-hand about the needs of [the] community and the critical role nonprofits play."

• Must be a junior or senior

2) The Princeton University Summer Journalism Program

• APPLICATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 20TH, 2015 AT 11:59 PM (ETS)

• Students have the opportunity to work in professional newsrooms and are taught by reports and editors from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, etc.

• Must be a junior in high school and want to pursue a career in journalism

3) The GO Getter Summer Internship

• The five-week summer internship is an "opportunity for high school students to learn and develop leadership skills"

• Students must be in high school with "good academic standing"

4) Rubin Museum of Art: Teen Art Labs

• A free internship where students explore the city "through artistic and cultural excursions" of art galleries, fancy restaurants, museums, etc.

• Learn the "art of discussion" with other artistic teenagers in New York City

5) Computer Science Summer Institute

• APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 5TH, 2015 AT 11:59 PM (ETS)

• An "unforgettable summer program at Google" where students will learn "programming fundamentals directly from Google engineers"

• Students must be a graduating high school senior

• Must have a passion for technology or computer science

6) UN Summer Student Internship 2015

• The five-week internship allows students to gain "insight into global issues, learn how NGO functions at the UN, and discover their individual passion for a cause."

• IMPORTANT: Internship has an administrative fee of $1,500. However, they do offer financial assistance.

1) United States Attorney's Office-Eastern District of New York

• The US Attorney's Office internships offers an "excellent opportunity for students students studying pre-law, criminal justice, accounting, information technology, library management, human resources or community crime prevention." 

• Students must be "enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school"

2) Wave Hill: Forest Project (PAID)

• APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 15TH, 2015

• Spend the summer working on "protecting and improving Wave Hill's woodlands, enjoying the outdoors, learning about restoration ecology and making friends."

• Students must be in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade

• Interested in urban natural areas

3) New York Aquarium Docent Program

• Application Period Opens: March 1st, 2015 

• Students become a docent (exhibit interpreter) and help "staff exhibits, teach visitors about marine conservation, and assist at events and education programs."

• Students must be fifteen or older

4) Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) 

• APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 20TH, 2015 AT 11:30 PM (ETS)

• The internship program is a "six-week opportunity for underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged high school and college students."

• Program exposes students to "variety of careers in the health field" and "various health issues affecting their communities."

• Selected students will work at designated clinic or hospital sites for three days a week from 9 AM until 3 PM

5) Town Hall Educational Outreach Program (PAID)

• A "competitive six-week paid" program that "places high school students from participating high schools in performing art venues throughout New York City."

• Internship provides high school students with "experience in all aspects of the performing arts"

Do Something Spring 2015 Internships

DO SOMETHING SPRING 2015 INTERNSHIPS 

The non-profit organization, Do Something, has three different internship positions: 

1) Market Intern

2) Campaigns Intern 

3) Office Management Intern 

General Requirements:

Each position is different, but there are general requirements that must be met in order to qualify for the position. These general requirements are: 

• Able to travel to our New York City office
• Passionate about young people changing the world and committed to social change 
• A member of DoSomething.org 
• Love the DoSomething.org culture and can work with a quirky, close-knit team (we mean it!)
• Able to work twice a week after school from January 26 - May 15 

Internship Positions:

• MARKET INTERN

As the high school marketing intern, you will help support the marketing team in outreach and research to get the DoSomething.org name out there.

• CAMPAIGNS INTERN

The campaigns intern support the campaigns team and helps research new causes, reaches out to members, and ensure campaigns are a great experience for all of our members.

• OFFICE MANAGEMENT INTERN

The office management intern supports the Office Manager and the finance team to make sure the office keeps moving. This includes helping to keep the office organized and tidy, filing and organizing  paperwork, and research as needed.

Here, all your questions will be answered! You all can have easy access to various internships (both paid and unpaid) during the spring and summer months. This page will be regularly updated with new internships that range from the sciences to the arts. 

What is an internship?

An opportunity where students work in temporary positions in the area or field they are interested in. Students may gain "work experiences" and valuable skills (communication, organization, time management, etc.) that can be applied in the real world.

Girls Who Code:

• Application will be available early January 2015

• A non-profit organization that works to "educate, inspire, and equip high school girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in computing fields." 

• Only girls who are currently sophomores or juniors can apply for the program.

Summer STEM Program (Cooper Union): 

• Application will be available early January 2015

• Organized by Cooper Union, the program is "an intensive, six-week experience" that enables students to engage with "hands-on engineering design and problem-solving" activities while encouraging participants for careers in technological innovation. 

• Only sophomores or juniors can apply for the program.

New York County 2015 High School Internship Program: PAID

• Application is available NOW; the deadline is on Friday, March 27, 2015 

• The program is a "rigorous six-week internship that provides students with an insider's view of the criminal justice system." 

• Only students who reside in Manhattan or attend school in Manhattan can apply; must be either a junior or senior

New-York Historical Society (Summer Program): 

• Application will be available March 2015 

• The Student Historian Program provides students with "vocational and academic training, public speaking and leadership skills" while increasing the "understanding of American art and history."

• Only students who are juniors or seniors can apply

Central Park Conservancy Summer Internship: PAID

• Application will be available March 2015

• The program is a "full time, paid internship" that offers high school students "an opportunity to support the Conservancy's horticulture, visitor services, and public programs departments."

• Two sessions are offered: Spring (February to May) or Summer (July to August); applications are not available yet

• The program allows high school students to "work together alongside museum staff to explore community, technology and education at CMOM."
